A POPULAR ice cream parlour had a 'very successful season' despite the weather making 'things very difficult'.

Cumbrian Cow Ice Cream, on the outskirts of Ulverston, has traded for the last time this year.

Co-owner Denise Stable said it had been a 'very successful season' despite the weather with clients from around the country and even from abroad.

Flavours such as honeycomb, Belgium chocolate and raspberry ripple were the favourites, according to Denise.

"We are really lucky - we have an awful lot of very loyal local people but then we also get tourists and holidaymakers that do spread out from the Lakes," she said.

"The weather has been making things very difficult because we have the drive-thru and the cow shed. Trying to judge which section to open because the weather forecast would say one thing and then by the time that day comes around and you have organised your staff rota and then the weather does something completely different - that is quite tricky."

With the closure for the winter period, Denise said it 'takes a bit of adjusting' as it is 'non-stop' from when they reopen in Easter to the end of the Summer.

"A lot of people don't realise that we are genuine farmers - we milk 350 cows at a farm in Urswick. My husband then brings the milk that we need to make the ice creams here. In a way, we make it trickier for ourselves because we try to make it as fresh as possible," said Denise.

"We used to run until October and do Halloween but we have pulled it back purely just from the workload and the fact that we have got bigger and it has got busier it is more tiring."

As to different events that occurred during their 2024 season, Denise recalls how Dave's Day brought a 'nice atmosphere' to the area.

"We only got a few bikers, but we were not really expecting them because we knew everybody was heading to Barrow but it was a really nice day," she said.

 "We also served ice cream to the Walk to Remember as they set off - everybody was in a good mood and raised money for a good cause."
