TEN thousands poppies could be cascading down the Hoad Monument for Remembrance Day.

People from all over Ulverston and surrounding areas are being invited to make knitted or crocheted poppies to cascade down the side of Hoad Hill.

The idea came after some discussions between Ulverston Town Mayor Graham Scrogham and Clare Parkin, a resident from Ulverston.

The net to which the poppies will be attached is planned to be around 50 square meters, with poppies being three inches in diameter.

The idea is planned to go ahead on next year's remembrance day on November 11.

Clare said she wanted the project to start now so more people could get on board.

"It sounds really easy and looks easy but once you have done a few it takes a tool in your hands," she said.

"It will be absolutely stunning if we can do this. Let's get the whole of Cumbria involved if we can."

Mr Scrogham said: "One of the most noticeable ones I have felt was a few years back outside the tower of London they had this waterfall of poppies and it was stunning and I thought it was a fantastic tribute.

"When I became the senior light housekeeper for the Sir John Barrow Monument I thought it is such an iconic building for the whole of Furness and I thought it was somewhere where I could replicate the waterfall of poppies. 

"We will need between 7 to 10 thousand poppies. If we get more fantastic, if we get less we will make it work - it will still look fantastic.

"Clare is so enthusiastic and she has motivated loads of people and she got lots of contacts in the knitting world."

Mr Scrogham is now looking to get some sponsorship due to the costs involved in getting balls of wool and knitting needles.

"There is a cost there and perhaps I might set up a GoFundMe page where people who can't knit but would love to be involved could perhaps donate," he said.

People can join Clare at the Knit or Not sessions at Quaker Meeting House
and the first Saturday of every month in the Hive in Ulverston market to knit or crochet.

There will be two drop-off points where people can drop off their poppies in Ulverston, including Croftlands Laundrette and the wool stall in the market.

And one at the Barrow and District Disability Association.
