AN off-duty bus driver helped conduct traffic when temporary lights stopped working.

The temporary traffic lights on Milnthorpe Road in Kendal were stuck on red last Thursday causing a long line of traffic on both sides of the road.

The temporary traffic lights, placed for gas works, have been causing delays for motorists heading into and out of town.

An off-duty bus driver stepped in to keep traffic moving when the lights faltered.

Jenna Stalham, works at the Kendal depot, was in the Lakes doing her shift so she was unaware of 'how bad' the traffic was in Kendal.

She said: "I just finished my duty and my daughter was waiting for her partner, who is also a bus driver, to finish and he was back in the traffic and I said 'Drive me there and park up where you can' and I'll start directing it.

"We could only get to River Fortune so I just walked to the traffic lights that were not working and started directing them all."

Jenna explained she 'just wanted to help' and directed the traffic for a 'good hour'.

"It was fun. I quite liked it and at one point there was no traffic and it was resolved," she said.

"People were thanking me and putting their hands out. I just put my hi-vis on and I was like 'Right you lot come, you lot stay' and it just went round like that.

"My older daughter came and I had my younger daughter who was standing with her but to start off it was just me.

"No-one came, I even signaled two police cars through and they just thanked me.

"There were four other ladies they were watching me and when I left they took over."

Westmorland and Furness Council confirmed the issue was resolved.

"A team visited the site as soon as we were made aware of it and rectified the issue," said a council spokesman.
