A housebound pensioner who believes he was the victim of a mail scam has felt the need to speak out after still experiencing problems with his letters.

Photographer Ian Roper, 79, relies on his post for banking arrangements, medical appointments and general communication as he doesn't use the internet. 

In 2022, he was the victim of a possible re-direction scam after his mail was re-routed to an address in Manchester which resulted in money being stolen.

For a couple of months afterward, he wasn't sure if his post was going to arrive.

After several complaints to Royal Mail, he eventually received an apology and £50 compensation.

This year, he moved back into his home at Lingmoor Rise, Kendal in June after spending 14 months in a care home.

Despite re-directing his post on June 10, his post still remains erratic.

Ian said: "I think it is unrelated to the previous scam however the delivery appears to be totally random.

"If it was the wrong post box occasionally I would understand but it appears to be more than that."

Ian often gets mail for his other neighbours who are several doors away and often gets his own letters in batches.

"It's as if they store them up," Ian said. "It's very bizarre, but it's getting to the point where it's becoming quite a serious problem now - especially for someone who doesn't like computers such as myself.

"I've missed medical letters, credit card bills, credit card statements, council tax bills and bank statements.

"Luckily, the organisations involved have been quite sympathetic but I shouldn't have to do all of this as it takes up so much time."

Ian has written to the postmaster about this problem but so far hasn't had a response.

He added: "This needs to be sorted now, Royal Mail needs to be taking care with every address, not just mine.

"There may be people out there more vulnerable than me who are missing important letters."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: "Our Kendal office has experienced some resourcing issues recently but, as staffing levels have now returned to normal, we expect deliveries to improve going forward.

"Regarding the customer’s address, the posties dedicated to his route have been reminded to confirm the address before posting."
