Furness and South Lakes bikers raised over £900 for a local charity dedicated to the last wish and legacy of a teenager.

The Furness And South Lakes Charity Rides group rides every year to raise money for a worthy local cause. 

This year they chose Alice's Escapes which is based in Ulverston and was created in honour of the late Alice Pyne.

Pride of Britain courage winner Alice died aged 17 in January 2013 after battling Hodgkin’s lymphoma for five years.

The inspirational teenager was insistent that her legacy charity would be called Escapes and would provide a retreat for seriously ill children and their families.

The important work at Bardsea Leisure Park was extended in 2017 to offer bereavement breaks for families who have lost a child.

(Image: Alice's Escapes) Starting from 9am on Saturday, August 11, around 30 bikers began an epic 180-mile loop route starting at Ulverston Sports Club on to Devil's Bridge, Sedbergh, Kirkby Stephen, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Alston, Hartside Pass, Orton, Tebay, Kendal and back again.

All in all, the bikers raised £925.20 for the teenager's charity.

Organiser Tim Holliday said: "It was a fantastic ride and people were videoing and waving along the way.

"I have been running charity rides from Ulverston for the last 15 years annually.

"We try to choose a small charity where the money can go directly to them as opposed to bigger charities where there can be a middleman.

"Alice's Escapes was recommended to us for 2024. We discovered that it's wonderful work that Vicky does and the fact that it's Alice's legacy, it just puts a lump in your throat.

"All of a sudden, all of these hardened bikers had a bit of dust in their eye."

(Image: Furness and South Lakes Charity Rides) On Tuesday, August 20, Tim, alongside some of the other bikers, met with Alice's mum Vicky Pennington-Pyne, to donate the money. 

"They are a wonderful bunch of lads," Vicky said. "I am a non-biker but they are such a welcoming community and after meeting them I thought 'I could get into this' - well you saw the wonderful turnout for Dave Day!

"I also went to see them off and I was astonished at the amount they raised.

"£925.20 is fantastic. A holiday can cost around £500 so this is near enough two holidays for someone who may be terminally ill. I am so grateful.

"I've received messages from people who have gone through such a horrific time, people who have lost a child, and they say they had such a wonderful peaceful experience at the Escapes. 

"One couple who stayed were inspired to launch their own caravans in Ireland offering a similar experience.

"This is Alice's legacy and it's my life now to keep it going."

Furness And South Lakes Charity Rides group is now looking to raise funds for a local charity for 2025.
