An eye-watering £8.6m worth of speeding fines have been issued to Cumbrian drivers in the last three years, with £3.2m handed out this past year.
Between April 2023 and April 2024, 32,000 Penalty Charge Notices were handed to drivers by police, an increase of 24% compared with 2021.
New data obtained by Legal Expert via Freedom of Information requests also reveals the top 20 roads where drivers are most likely to be caught speeding in Cumbria.
The worst being the A591 near Ings, where more than 3,000 drivers have been caught with a speed camera in the last 12-months.
Between 2021/22, a total of 25,672 speeding fines were handed to drivers, rising to 29,088 the following year.
According to Government guidelines, the minimum penalty for speeding is £100 fine and three penalty points added to a driver’s licence. Motorists who receive 12 or more points within three years can be disqualified from driving.
Within two weeks of a vehicle being caught speeding, the registered keeper will be send a ‘Notice of Intended Prosecution,’ issued by the police informing a driver they intend to prosecute for a motoring offence, and a ‘Section 172 Notice’, a legal requirement of a registered vehicle keeper to provide details regarding the alleged traffic offence.
Dangerous driving offences in England and Wales can mean up to two years in prison, an unlimited fine, driving disqualifications or points.
If a death is caused by dangerous driving, it can lead to life imprisonment.
The study also revealed the 20 roads in Cumbria that see the most speeding fines handed out in the last year.
The A591 Ings travelling east (EF6) saw over 3,000 and was ranked as the worst road for speeding fines, while the A66 Kirkby Thore travelling west (2367) and east (1456) were ranked second and third.
Close to Carlisle, the A7 Longtown travelling south, and the Warwick Bridge/Corby Mill EB saw 539 and 497 respectively.
The A596 Wigton bypass travelling west finished 19th on the list, with 252 recorded speeding fines between 2023 and 2024.
Shap Road, near Kendal Rugby Club, featured twice on the list.
