DELAYS in deliveries left the shelves bare in Kendal's Asda over the weekend.

Customers found essential items such as bread, groceries, meats and toiletries were in short supply at the Burton Road store.

Shopper Helen Bell shared photos of the empty shelves, which were reported to have been an issue throughout the weekend of August 17-18.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately some of the scheduled deliveries to our Kendal store were delayed this past weekend, and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. We would like to reassure our customers that the store has since received these deliveries and this now has now been resolved.”

Asda attributed this to an isolated incident at the store.

The company is currently investing £30 million to increase staff levels to improve its replenishment of stock and cleaning in stores.

Recent industry data from Kantar found that Asda had 12.7 per cent of the UK grocery market over the three months to July 7, shrinking from 13.6 per cent share a year earlier.

The retailer's finance chief Michael Gleeson said on August 8: "It is important to highlight that switching losses to the discounters, Aldi and Lidl as well, have receded.

“We have addressed that well with our price matching programme and are pleased with that.

"We are still happy with the longer-term progress we have been making.”

The company is owned by Mohsin Issa and private equity firm TDR Capital. Earlier this year, Mohsin's brother Zuber exited Asda, selling his 22.5 per cent stake to TDR Capital.
