A CONTROVEROSIAL comedian has announced his tour date at a venue in Kendal has been cancelled due to lack of ticket sales and ‘other unforeseen circumstances’.

Roy Chubby Brown was scheduled to perform at Westmorland Hall, Burton Road, on December 6.

Taking to social media to announce the news, his social media team said: “Unfortunately, venue management have informed us that they are cancelling due to a handful of local complaints and a concern over slow sales at this present time.

“The show is still five months away and they have only just started advertising, even though it has been on sale since the end of 2023."

An official statement from the Venue Management team at Westmorland Hall read: “Unfortunately due to unexpectedly low tickets sales and other unforeseen circumstances we have regretfully taken the decision to cancel Roy Chubby Brown's upcoming date.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Customers will be contacted by their point of purchase for a refund."

Earlier this year, Westmorland and Furness Council said they had ‘no plans’ to ever book Chubby Brown again at Barrow’s Forum Theatre.

Chubby Brown and his team said they were left ‘baffled and confused’ about that particular decision.

A council spokesman confirmed the comic would not be performing at The Forum.

“Westmorland and Furness Council aims to create an exciting, varied and balanced programme of events at our venues which will be popular and make a significant contribution to residents' access to culture and entertainment," they said.

"The council has no plans to book Roy Chubby Brown for The Forum at this time.”

His management team added in response to the Kendal cancellation: “Personally, I don’t think this is a venue management decision.

"It sounds like the council’s influence has come into play again. The venue were adamant to cancel even though I suggested we look at a marketing plan to boost sales if that was their concern.

“When will this nonsense stop? Just give people the right to choose for themselves. What harm is a Chubby show behind closed doors doing apart from putting a smile on people’s faces.

“We soldier on and apologise to the Kendal fans.”

The comedian, who is widely known for his sarcastic blue humour, is pencilled in to perform his show titled ‘Not Meant To Offend, It’s Simply Comedy Tour!’ the night before on December 5 at Cloud Nine and the Lounge nightclub in Barrow.

It comes after Cumbria Animal Hen and Rescue penned the contract earlier this month.
