We were able to get an exclusive look inside a new shop on Ulverston’s High Street.

A new shop filled with a treasure trove of eclectic products will open its doors for the first time this weekend.

Jitterbug is a family-owned business in the heart of Ulverston, offering ‘something for everyone’.

Sue Little and her husband Bill bought the ‘wonderfully quirky’ three storey building in November 2021 and have been gradually renovating the property over the past three years.

Sue recently retired from her position as head teacher of Low Furness C of E Primary School, ending her impressive 32-year career in education.

She said it had always been a dream of hers to open a shop in her hometown…

The ground floor is like a rabbit warren, with goods tucked away in every corner. You’ll find luxury dog wear and pet bowls, trinkets, scarves, bracelets, keyrings, mugs, water bottles, incense burners, candles, mirrors, door stops, cards and more.

The first flight of stairs takes you up to a bright and colourful room, full of children’s books, vibrant stuffed dinosaurs and other toys, as well as crafts like bracelet making kits from local business, Beadology.

The top floor is a beautiful, open room dedicated to being an art gallery featuring work from a number of local artists.

The initial plan was to open an Ulverston shop filled with Ulverston things made by Ulverston people, and the shop is bursting with local talent.

The mix of stock and local items came about as Sue was inspired by all the different conversations she had with people. When local crafts people offered their creations, she was happy to provide space in the shop and Jitterbug grew as she met more people.

Sue’s favourite thing in the shop is the reusable water bottles, but she is in love with the brightly coloured dinosaurs on the first floor.

On Thursday night, Sue hosted a ‘soft launch’ and invited guests to check out the shop, drink prosecco and wander around.

She said: “We’ll see what people think, what they like and are interested in.”

The shop will officially open to the public for the first time at 9:30am on Saturday July 27.

Sue said: “I think it will be really busy, I’ve had so many people say they can’t wait to pop in.”

In fact, people are so eager to see inside that it’s important to remember to keep the door locked, as people have been trying the door and even walk in!

Ahead of opening, Sue said: “I’m excited, terrified. I’m really happy with it, it’s lovely to be involved with so many local people. I’ve gone out of my way to make sure there is no overlap with local businesses, hopefully it’s completely unique.”
