Residents are invited to attend community drop-in sessions on new plans for the New Road section of the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme.

Two of these events are scheduled for Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18, between 10am and 7pm at the Kendal Flood Scheme Information Hub.

Besides these meetings, residents can also learn more about the scheme's improved plans and provide feedback on the Kendal Flood Hub online.

The revised plans follow a new planning application sent to Westmorland and Furness Council after several design enhancements since the original plan was approved back in June 2019.

Westmorland and Furness planning department is in the process of determining the application.

On the Kendal Flood Hub, interested individuals will find an information pack outlining the design decisions regarding a roadside wall and integrated flood gates.

The Flood Hub also offers an online feedback form for providing opinions on the designs and overall scheme.

The revised plans resulted from local residents' and interest groups' feedback concerning a 2019 approved proposal for common land.

The Environment Agency, in response, made further adjustments to the flood scheme design and submitted it to Westmorland and Furness Council.

There are various adjustments in the new design, including lowering the flood wall height along the New Road Common.

These changes will enhance the open aspect and accessibility of the area for visitors and locals alike.

The design will also ensure a safer common access arrangement for the fairground and for other functions.

The New Road flood wall is harmonious with the stonework and finish of the Gooseholme Bridge and the broader flood scheme throughout Kendal.

Not only will it preserve and create a safe community green space with access for everyone, but it will also help protect more than 1,920 houses and 2,250 local businesses from flooding in Kendal, Burneside, Staveley and Ings.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "These changes to the original design have been made in response to the feedback from communities.

"We listened, we acted on local people's requests, and we believe the new design will enhance the town whilst providing better protection to homes and businesses against the very real threat of flooding."

They added: "The two community drop-in events provide an opportunity for people to find out more about the New Road plans, and members of the Environment Agency will be available to answer your questions."

The public can visit the Community Flood Hub every Tuesday and Thursday from 10am to 4pm.
