Residents are invited to engage with new and improved plans for a section of a flood risk management scheme at two upcoming community meetings.
The New Road section of the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme will be discussed at the Kendal Flood Scheme Information Hub in Kendal on Tuesday, July 16 and Thursday, July 18 from 10am to 7pm.
The new plans have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council, and aim to improve upon the original planning application that was approved in June 2019.
After receiving feedback on the original plans, the Environment Agency proposed further improvements to the flood scheme design, and these are the designs which have been submitted to Westmorland and Furness Council.
The updated designs include changes to the height of the flood wall along New Road Common, improvements to the area's open aspect and accessibility, and safer access measures for the Fairground and other operational activities.
The redesigned flood wall will complement the stonework and finish of Gooseholme Bridge and the wider flood scheme in Kendal.
It is hoped that the plans will create and maintain a safe community green space with access for all.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "These changes to the original design have been made in response to the feedback from communities.
"We listened, we acted on local people’s requests, and we believe the new design will enhance the town whilst providing better protection to homes and businesses against the very real threat of flooding.
"The two community drop-in events provide an opportunity for people to find out more about the New Road plans and members of the Environment Agency will be available to answer your questions.”
It is hoped that, when complete, the Kendal Flood Risk Management Scheme will better protect more than 1,920 homes and 2,250 local businesses from flooding in Kendal, Burneside, Staveley and Ings.
Members of the public can also attend the Community Flood Hub on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10am to 4pm.
Further information about the New Road plans and a feedback form are available on the Kendal Flood Hub website, in the Public Consultation section, at www.thefloodhub.co.uk/kendal/.
