Keswick is the most stylish place to live in Cumbria, according to a new survey.

The tourism hotspot was the highest-rated location in the county in a list of the 60 most stylish places by the online store Furniturebox.

In second place was Grasmere, Hawkshead was third, Cartmel was fourth and Coniston was fifth.

Locations were ranked according to the beauty of the buildings, the stunning scenery, how ‘Instagrammable’ were the best features and their popularity as a filming location.

Countless film and TV productions have been filmed in Keswick including Agatha Christie’s Poirot and the BBC1 drama starring Christopher Ecclestone The A Word.

Furniturebox polled 5,000 people, with panels in each big city and county including Cumbria.

Keswick is a market town in northwest England’s Lake District National Park, surrounded by mountains like Skiddaw.

In town, The Cumberland Pencil Museum documents the history of pencils, and the Keswick Museum & Art Gallery displays local artefacts.

Castlerigg Stone Circle dates back to the Neolithic era on a hilltop east of town. Vast Derwent Water lake is south of town, with boat tours and the Theatre by the Lake.

Furniturebox spokesperson said: “Keswick is the most stylish place to live in Cumbria.

“All 60 places on the list would have been worthy winners and show why the UK is such a stylish country, loved by artists, filmmakers and tourists worldwide.

“What is interesting is how influential Instagram has become in boosting tourism in many of our top 60, particularly around Cumbria. It is also a massive help for visitor numbers if a popular film or TV show uses a town or village as a location.

“Most of the locations in the top 60 are not the most affluent or fashionable in their localities. It shows that style can be achieved whatever your budget - and that is very true of furniture.”
