CUMBRIANS are among the list of names to be recognised in The King’s Birthday 2024 Honours.

The honours system gives national recognition to people who have given exceptional service in public and community life and are committed to making a difference to those around them.

It was revealed on Friday night that several Cumbrians had been given the honour.

Among those is Jim Walker President of Cumbria Tourism who has built his reputation in travel and tourism over more than 40 years, with a series of wide-ranging chief executive, managing director and chief officer roles in both the public and private sector.

He is the Founder Chair of the Eden Tourism Network and a previous recipient of both ‘Tourism Personality of the Year’ at the 2022 Cumbria Tourism Awards and the ‘Lifetime Contribution to Cumbria’ award at the in-Cumbria Business Awards. For the last 22 years, Jim has been employed by the Lake District Estates Group, based in Kendal.

“Receiving this award is a huge and unexpected honour for me personally, but also very importantly, recognition of our brilliant tourism industry, its value to Cumbria’s economy and how, with Cumbria Tourism’s help, together we have navigated through some very big challenges recently, the pandemic being just one example," he said.

"The challenges continue but Cumbria’s tourism industry, through partnership working together, continues to set an example to the rest of the UK.”

The 3 Dads Walking were also given the honours for their fundraising work for the North West based charity PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide in memory of their daughters which includes Sophie Airey - a former pupil at Kirkbie Kendal School, who took her own life in 2018 at the age of 29.

In a joint statement, Andy Airey, from Cumbria, Mike Palmer and Tim Owen said: “The money raised has supported PAPYRUS’ expansion plans to open more hubs in communities across the UK and extend the operating hours of its emergency helpline, HOPELINE247, where people can talk to suicide prevention professionals at any time of any day.

“Their work saves lives but we, as a nation, can do more. We can save more lives by educating our young people around the risk they face. Suicide remains the biggest killer of under 35s in the UK, so let’s give them the suicide prevention skills to keep themselves and others safe.”

Jayne Moorby, head of marketing at Oxley Group in Ulverston, has also been recognised in the 2024 Birthday Honours list for her services to the defence and aerospace industry.

The 47-year-old is also the Co-Chair of the Defence PaSMEC (Primes and SME Community), a Northern Powerhouse Export Champion, supporting other businesses on their export journey, and sits on the Make UK Regional Advisory Board representing the interests of the manufacturing community.

"We have an extremely talented team at Oxley creating cutting-edge technology, I’m immensely proud to be part of that team and to have the opportunity to promote the UK's sovereign aerospace and defence capability around the world. Small and medium-sized businesses account for 95% of this industry and I am committed to always ensuring their voice is heard in the industry."
