A HIKER doing the Yorkshire Three Peaks died near the summit of Pen-y-ghent despite being given CPR from an off duty paramedic.
Mountain rescuers reported that a 50-year-old man had collapsed and was given help by the paramedic.
Cave Rescue Organisation members approached the summit but turned round when air ambulance paramedics confirmed that he had died and they would fly him off the hill.
"Other members assisted with landing the aircraft and carrying him to a waiting road ambulance," a spokesperson from the team said.
"Our thoughts are with the walker's companions and his family at home."
