A high street opticians is rallying Cumbrians to boost disadvantaged children's reading skills and take part in a 25,000 mile challenge.

Specsavers is among many supporters of the Schoolreaders Race for Reading event - an initiative aimed at raising awareness and funds for reading support in schools.

Anyone can join Race for Reading, with participants encouraged to walk, swim or cycle while logging their distances.

The annual event, held over 80 days, sees Specsavers as its headline sponsor this year.

Race for Reading is free to join and runs till June 24.

Every £40 of sponsorship will provide a child with a year of vital one-to-one reading support in school.

The collective goal is to cover 25,000 miles, travelling 'Around the World in 80 Days'.

Schoolreaders, a national charity, has been improving children’s literacy for the past decade by creating a network of volunteers who listen to children read in primary schools.

A spokesman at Specsavers said: “We are delighted to partner with Schoolreaders for the Race for Reading event and would urge as many people to sign up for this as possible.

“As the majority of what is taught in schools is presented visually, good eye health and strong reading skills are both vital elements needed to ensure little ones keep on learning, which is why we’re pleased to work closely with Schoolreaders in the North West.”

There are currently 173 Schoolreaders volunteers helping children to read across the North West.

Jane Whitbread, founder and CEO of Schoolreaders, said: "Schoolreaders is thrilled to welcome Specsavers as the headline sponsor for our Race for Reading event.

"Their commitment to children’s health and education aligns perfectly with our mission, and we are excited to work together to have a long-lasting impact on children's literacy and life-chances in communities across the country."
