The disappearance of a woman and her cat prompted a multi-agency rescue search.

The woman and her pet had been reported as missing after going camping, with fire and rescue crews called out to Leck at 8:02pm on Monday.

Fire crews from Bentham, Hornby and Morecambe were joined by USAR (Urban Search and Rescue), drone, and mountain rescue teams to aid the search.

A spokesperson from Bentham Fire Station said: "Prior to our crews arrival, the female and cat had been located but reports of further casualties shouting inside a nearby cave system was believed to have been heard from cave enthusiasts.

"To ensure everyone’s safety, Mountain Rescue completed the search of 20 caves whilst fire crews completed a square mile search of grassland for any remaining casualties.

"A drone was also deployed to assist with the ground search."

The search was eventually discontinued after it was believed there were no further casualties missing in the area.

The incident was left with police and mountain rescue, with both services attempting a final search this morning (May 21).

With the Bentham crew returning to their station at 2:00am, they overlooked their own work to highlight the endeavour of the mountain rescue teams.

The spokesperson added: "The Cave Rescue Organisation (CRO) made amazing efforts last night and it never ceases to amaze us - the dedication of these teams who are purely volunteers is outstanding.

"It's possible to show your appreciation with thanks and kind words, which to all Rescue teams means the world but if you feel like it's possible, they accept donations online which help fund their operations."
