A CUMBRIAN man will walk more than 260 miles to all of the rugby clubs in Cumbria, to raise funds for a new clubhouse in Keswick.
Alan Dunn, from Keswick, who is a former mayor in the town, will walk 265 miles to all of the rugby union clubs in Cumbria with the aim of raising funds for the Keswick Rugby Club 'Big Build', an appeal for funding to build a new clubhouse at Davidson Park.
The club now only have £115,000 to raise to complete funding for the £1.9million project after many initiatives have been carried out by Keswick Rugby Club and its members over the last year.
On May 7, Alan will begin his walking challenge, which will see him walk to 21 rugby clubs in the county from as south as Kirby Lonsdale and Kendal right up to Carlisle and Silloth over the course of 10 stages.
Alan said: "My wife Heather and I have already donated to the Keswick Rugby Club 'Big Build' Appeal for funding to build a new clubhouse.
"However, we felt that we would like to do more so I racked my brains to think of a means of raising more funds. My idea was to do the full Cumbria Coastal path walk but Heather said I needed to something more 'rugby related', and suggested I walk to all the Rugby Union clubs in Cumbria, all 21, so 265 miles in total.
"Thanks Heather!
"Whilst I am not a rugby player (or an ex-rugby player) I have been a supporter of the club for many years.
"Heather has been the first aider for the men’s senior teams for the last 22 years. Our sons, Mark, Ian and John, have all played for the first team, with John captaining the side for four years.
"Now daughter Katie has been coaching the girls, including our granddaughter Claudia, for the past five years. Claudia, now 15, plays for the Under 16 Falcons who have just won the County Cup, having been unbeaten all season."
In a statement on social media, Keswick RFC said: "The walk has been split into 10 challenging stages, with Alan paying a visit and meeting representatives from the rugby clubs along the way.
"Everyone at the rugby club can’t thank Alan enough for taking on this individual challenge in aid of our new clubhouse."
