An emergency road closure is in place tonight as an ‘unsafe building’ is demolished.
Westmorland and Furness Building Control have today (13 February) served a dangerous structure notice on properties 133 to 139 Stricklandgate, Kendal, following a period of close monitoring.
A council spokesman said: ‘The building has unfortunately deteriorated to the point where it is considered to be an immediate safety risk and causing danger to the public and therefore requires demolition.
‘Our Highways and Building Control team are working together to make sure the operation is delivered safely and as efficiently as possible, enforcing an emergency road closure on the A5284 Stricklandgate, Kendal between 7.30pm (13 February) and 3am (14 February).
‘In order to get the abnormal load vehicle that will be used in the demolition to the location safely, there will also be a temporary and very short suspension to the one way system on Stricklandgate, Highgate and Kirkland for up to 15 minutes.
‘The vehicle will access the site via Kirkland and Highgate, and then travel the one way system through Stricklandgate and the pedestrianised area of town under traffic management and with the support of Cumbria Police. Following completion of the works, the vehicle will follow the reverse journey.
‘Teams will be working through the night to complete the works by 3am, minimising as much disruption to road users as possible and with the safety of our communities being our top priority.’
