Kirkby Stephen Hockey Club managed to raise over £2,000 over the weekend thanks to an annual event.

The club hosted its 'Bashful Bingo' fundraiser on Saturday, bringing in a 'whopping' total of £2,339.42.

Added to the 'Stars in their Eyes' event last November, this means that the club has raised over £4,500 over the course of the current season.

Anthea Bowman, a fundraising secretary at the club, explained: "This isn't like other current bingos, taking the fun of the game and adding music, dancing on chairs, foam glow sticks, and incredible prizes.

"We sold over 130 tickets, pulling together as a club to ensure the event went ahead and was a success."

Various members of the club took on different roles to make sure the event ran smoothly.

Anthea was joined by Abigail Ridley as the bingo callers, Di and Mick Boustead were the resident DJs, Debbie Barr and Jenny Sayer worked the raffle, and Bethany Handley was on hand to check the numbers.

Added to this, Mark Tyson and Bradley Chapman dressed up in the women's hockey attire to entertain the crowd, with Catherine Ewbank, Rachael Gowing and Jess Chapman also keeping the 'buzz' of the evening in full flow.

"With dance offs, sing-offs, and 'go find me' games, there were multiple prizes to be won," Anthea added.

"These varied from donations from local businesses and friends, with the top prize being a 43-inch TV, but we also had a wheelbarrow, a spirit level, a six-week block of Zumba classes, a huge bag of dog food, a box of Border Biscuits, a kids ride-on tractor, and a box of Cheerios."

The club wanted to thank Jenny Ellis, Waitings, Kirkby Stephen Business Park, Pigneys, JT Atkinsons, Johnstones Garage, Northern ARB, Wildflower, Out of Eden, Century Chinese Restaurant, Kennedys Chocolate Factory, The Bay Horse at Winton and AB Sports Therapy for all their donated gifts.

Anthea finished by saying: "Both events were done with the help of the community, for the community."
