CUMBRIA has added to its culinary offering, as two new Michelin star restaurants have been added to the county's already impressive portfolio.
On Monday, February 5 the new Michelin stars were unveiled at the Michelin Guide Ceremony 2024, held at the Midland Hotel in Manchester.
On top of its already 11 Michelin stars held last in 2023, two new Cumbrian restaurants were added to the list: Cedar Tree by Hrishikesh Desai at Farlam Hall in Brampton and Lake Road Kitchen, Ambleside.
Cedar Tree by Hrishikesh Desai, Brampton
The guide said: "The eponymous Chef here has been awarded a Michelin Star once again, having previously held the distinction for six years at the now-closed HRiSHi. Now based inside Farlam Hall Hotel in northernmost Cumbria, Hrishikesh’s Indian heritage influences the menu of dishes that are deftly spiced and technically precise.
"Quality produce forms the basis of the cooking, which also displays sophistication and strong depth of flavour. The refurbished country house setting adds an air of elegance to proceedings."
Lake Road Kitchen, Ambleside
The judges said: "In the pretty town of Ambleside, Lake Road Kitchen joins the roster of Michelin-starred restaurants in the Lake District. Chef-owner James Cross has truly established himself here, and his cooking has now taken the leap to the next level.
"The tasting menu flows with ease from one skilful dish to the next, with each one demonstrating balance, restraint and harmonious flavour combinations. The cooking is modern in style, with influences from around the globe used to get the best out of the first-rate produce."

This year, five special awards were also presented. These highlight exceptional individuals and remarkable teams who have particularly impressed the Michelin Inspectors over the past year.
Michelin Sommelier Award – Valentin Mouillard from L’Enclume, Cartmel
The judges said: "Coming from a winemaking family, Valentin Mouillard has worked at L’Enclume for 7 years. He is a welcoming, engaging character and guests are drawn to him as he describes his choices with care and pride.
"He does not over-explain or try too hard to impress the diner, instead he offers his thoughts on the wine clearly and succinctly.
"The wine list he curates deftly mixes big names and lesser-known options, while his non-alcoholic flights are influenced by the restaurant’s farm and its produce."
