An outdoor photography exhibition telling the stories 40 Cumbrian farms has been unveiled at a farm near Kendal.

The exhibit, displaying photographs from a coffee table book 'Forty Farms', has been set up at Low Sizergh, and will run from now through to Easter 2024.

Visitors can survey 40 large panels, each featuring a different farm along the approximately two-mile long exhibition, which trails through farmland and woodland.

The trail at Low Sizergh is four and a half miles from J36 of the M6, offering a detour on journeys to and from the Lake District.

British Life Photographer of the Year and Cumbrian farmer Amy Bateman has her work brought to life on the accessible family-friendly trail.

Almost 9,000 copies of her book 'Forty Farms' have been snapped up since it was launched last year.

Each of her photographs captures a moment in time at farms during a period of profound change.

From farmsteads that stand as testaments to history to those that are at the cutting edge of innovation, visitors will be exposed to all aspects of this evolving agricultural community.

The exhibition also shines a spotlight on award-winning cheese makers, world-renowned sheep breeders, and entrepreneurs challenged with the task of producing quality foods amidst financial challenges in a landscape appreciated globally for its natural beauty.

Amy Bateman said: "It’s so important to me to tell the stories of the people and landscape of Cumbria.

"And there’s no better place to do that than on a farm that features in my book."

Alison Park, the host of the exhibit, said: "Low Sizergh has lived, quite publicly, many of the themes of Amy’s book.

"We love welcoming people to the farm, to see us in action.

"We are proud to be part of this exhibition which is free, because of support from the H&H Group."

H&H Group Chief Executive Richard Rankin expressed the honour of being able to use the exhibition to highlight the contributions made by farmers.

He said: "Farmers are at the very heart of the Cumbrian and Lakeland landscapes.

"It is their work which has moulded and forged these landscapes for generations.

"It is a privilege to be able to highlight their work through this farm-based outdoor exhibition of Amy’s wonderful images."

Forty Farms Photographic Exhibition will be open daily, 9am to 5.30pm, every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Visitors are advised to dress for the outdoors.
