A series of climate events are being held across Westmorland and Furness during October with the aim of helping the council shape and inform Part Two of its Climate Action Plan.

The series of five events, called 'join our climate conversation', are open to everyone and will be an opportunity for people to hear from the council about the impacts of climate change on the area as well as its response to it.

The event will also be an opportunity for people to let the council know what they are doing as individuals or in the community to address climate change. They can also share their views on future actions and ask any questions they may have.

There will be four events spread across the district in the following locations:

Barrow, The Forum – October 17

• Kendal Town Hall – October 23

• Penrith Town Hall – October 24

Ulverston Coronation Hall – 26 October

A fifth one will be an online event on Thursday November 2.

South Lakes MP and Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Environment, Food and Rural AffairsTim Farron has been vocal about environmental issues in the past.

In 2022 he called climate change 'our biggest earthly threat' following the government's approval of a new coal mine in Cumbria.

Mr Farron said: "Climate change is such a crucial issue that Westmorland and Furness Council have a big role in leading on how we respond locally.

"The council know that we stand a much greater chance of bringing down emissions and protecting our beautiful environment by working with and listening to residents.

"That’s why I think these events are really important and would encourage everyone who can make it to attend."

Westmorland and Furness Council Cabinet Member for Climate and Biodiversity, Councillor Giles Archibald, said:

"The aim of these climate conversations is to foster some really vital and open discussions about climate change with our local residents and communities and use the feedback to help shape and inform Part Two of our Climate Action Plan.

"The climate emergency is something which will impact all of us and we want to involve and listen to those it will affect so they can have their say.

"The events are open to everyone and will be an opportunity for people to hear from us about the impacts of climate change on our area and our response to the climate crisis, but more importantly for people to let us know what they are doing to address climate change, share their views on future actions and ask any questions they may have.

"If you are interested in hearing about our plans, sharing your thoughts and views and having the opportunity to meet others in your area concerned for the climate, then I strongly encourage you to come along. We hope to see you there!"

Each event will run from 7pm-8.30pm with doors opening at 6:30pm. You can sign up at the eventbrite Join our Climate Conversations page
