Kendal Torchlight celebrations returned in style after three years of Covid-limited events.

The day saw a mix of live music acts, dancers, street performers and an array of activities ranging from crazy golf and facepainting, to traditional Asian arts and crafts.

In a unique first, the team from Lakeland orienteering also set up a trail around town using giant torchlight letters.

The famous annual procession, showcasing the creativity of local artists and community groups, started and finished at Abbot Hall.

Kendal Sea Cadets proudly marched, as they have since 1970, alongside Girl Guiding South Cumbria, Kendal United Football Club, Cumbria Police Cadets, the Brewery Arts Centre, Wheels for all, Kendal Dance Academy and Dance Atikk.

The procession was led by Miss Kendal with a huge entry from Help Kendal Bloom.

The theme 'old and new' represented the processions return while looking forward to the future of the event with this year seeing an amazing turnout, said organisers.

A drone show formed a spectaculer grand finale, with the torchlight flame rotating in the sky above the Castle and the words 'thank you'.

This was a first for Kendal and something that required airspace clearance beforehand.

Chair of the volunteer committee Craig Pearson said. "This year was the start of a vision to build the event even bigger and better.

"Despite the challenges, we were blown away by the support we received. Our community entry was made by a variety of local schools and community groups and on the day the lanterns, flowers and seeds were carried by all members of the community who wanted to be involved, some as groups, some as family members who just wanted to be part of the procession.

"Kendal College once again wowed us with their creativity and talent with the performers and their stage management of the music stages. And of course, being able to bring the light show to Kendal was a proud moment.”

“We were so pleased to see so many people, out in Kendal, showing support, having fun, getting involved and making the atmosphere so amazing and we hope to be able to raise the bar even more next year.

"But to do this we need help. The group of volunteer organisers this year was smaller than ever, so if next year is to go ahead, we need more people to come on board. If you think you could help, please get in touch.”
