A GRANT scheme has been launched to support businesses to improve their shop fronts in Ulverston.
The business front improvement grant scheme aims to boost shop fronts in selected areas to support the growth of local businesses, enhance the local environment and raise the town's image amongst locals and visitors.
The grant scheme is funded through Ulverston Business Improvement District (BID) and the council.
The total amount available through this scheme is £10,000 with up to £500 per business.
All businesses with premises located within the Ulverston BID area and who pay their yearly levy to the BID are eligible.
It is aimed at businesses that are looking to fix, upgrade and improve their business frontage. Properties that have been vacant for a minimum period of six months are eligible to apply to the fund.
Leaseholders with a commercial business lease must have at least three years left on the lease and the landlord's written permissions.
Examples of eligible commercial premises include shops, financial and professional services, restaurants, public houses, cafes and food takeaways and engineering, workshops, and trading garages.
The scheme will fund the repair and reinstatement of all or any part of a business front fixture that is visible from the street or road, including the first and second floors of premises where they are used for commercial activities, the repainting of shop fronts, the repair and reinstatement of guttering and down-pipes and pedestrian access improvements compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act.
Both tenants and building owners can apply.
Applications for funding must be made by June 30 2024 and works completed by December 31 2024.
Michelle Scrogham, chair of Ulverston BID, said: "I'm pleased that we're able to offer this grant scheme which has been match funded by Westmorland & Furness Council.
"The appearance of the town and each individual business is vitally important to attract custom and visitors to the area. The inclusion of accessibility improvements will hopefully allow many more people to be able to enjoy the shops and businesses."
The Purple Pound refers to the spending power of disabled households.
Cllr Scrogham said: "The purple pound is an estimated £249 billion per year, and many businesses are missing out on sales due to a lack of access. Small changes could allow access for all and improve trade at the same time, so I’m hoping to see businesses take full advantage of this scheme."
