A CUMBRIAN cyclist will embark on a race around the Netherlands and raise money for a charity.
Jamie Clowes, from Holme, and his friend Sean from Nottingham, will be taking part in the do-it-yourself Race Around the Netherlands Challenge.
The challenge, which is taking place this month, is a self-supported bike packing cycling covering a distance of 2,000 miles over two weeks.
The route incudes a variety of diverse locations ranging from historic cities and coastal shores to the endless heath fields of the Veluwezoom National Park.
Jamie's mum Sue is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and when Jamie told her about his extreme challenge, she insisted he raised money for CancerCare.
All of their tickets, ferries and race entries have been paid for, therefore all the money raised will be donated.
“I'm feeling excited for the challenge, training hasn't been as consistent as I'd hoped but I feel like my fitness is where it needs to be. I'm looking forward to just being on the bike banging out mile after mile. I’m most excited about experiencing the amazing Dutch cycling infrastructure. Though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also looking forward to a finisher's beer,” said Jamie.
This self-supported challenge requires participants to wild camp with only the essentials they need so Jamie and Sean will be taking a limited amount of belongings with them.
Sean said: "I'm looking forward to the challenge. I've ridden around that part of the world a few times but never done it as a race. And to also be raising money for something so close to my friend's heart makes it even better."
The pair have set a target of £2,000 and have so far raised just over £1,000.
