A SOUTH Lakes home care company is hosting a Dementia Awareness Day at the end of the month.

Home Instead South Lakes want to make their local community dementia friendly, so that acceptance and understanding is the norm.

Taking place at Beetham Nurseries, on Wednesday June 28 from 9.30am until 5pm, the dementia-focussed day will welcome members of the community to come along and gain a better understanding of how to support their loved ones if and when they are diagnosed with the condition.

Home Instead's Dementia Awareness Day will have a 'Virtual Dementia Bus', which is the only scientifically and medically proven method of giving a person with a healthy brain the experience of what dementia might be like.

This tour gives people a window into the world of someone living with dementia and enables loved ones to be able to give support in a better way as they will gain a better understanding of the disease.

The funding for this event has been partly supported by the husband of a former client who lived with dementia and was cared for by the team at Home Instead South Lakes.

His donation meant Home Instead South Lakes was able to create an Award for Dementia Care in his wife's name, which will be awarded every year to a team of care professionals working for the company which has provided exceptional care.

The remainder of the money will go towards the Virtual Dementia Bus which will bring a fresh insight into the world of someone living with dementia.

Louise Yates, registered and general manager of Home Instead South Lakes said: "We hope our Dementia Awareness Day will encourage people in our local community to come along and learn more about the condition.

"We will be there along with other local support groups and will be answering questions on Lasting Power of Attorneys (LPoAs), funding, support groups, activities and how to be diagnosed.”

Louise continued: “Along with learning more about dementia and what help is available, Beetham Nurseries is a very nice spot for a cup of tea and some shopping! You can pop along anytime.”
