A RESCUE service was deployed to search for a missing man.
Rescuers from Coniston Mountain Rescue Team were called upon on Saturday at 2.37pm at Hodge Close Quarry after a couple explored the area around it.
The man entered one of the tunnels, leaving his companion concerned when he did not emerge.
His companion then called Cumbria Police for help.
A Coniston Mountain Rescue Team spokesman said: “We despatched two Land Rovers to the quarry, where a quick search of the likely tunnel found nothing, so a wider search commenced including nearby Cathedral Quarry.
“The man was found walking along a path nearby, unaware that he was reported missing, having passed through the tunnel and out at the other end.”
14 volunteer team members of Coniston Mountain Rescue Team attended, plus two members of Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit who were in the area.
The incident lasted one hour and 50 minutes.
