A SOUTH Cumbria zoo is set to expand after a planning application was given the green light.

The work at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis, near Milnthorpe, will see additional animal enclosures created and greater car parking capacity – an additional 43 spaces, including overspill – introduced. 

Zoo director Jo Marsden said having the ability to welcome more visitors would provide an opportunity to have a 'better and more effective' zoo.

"After 31 years, everyone at the Lakeland Wildlife Oasis finally feels we have the opportunity and space to grow," she said.

More than 20 letters of representation related to the application were submitted with many expressing support.

Anne Harvey, of Kirkham, near Preston, said her family had found themselves unable to park when visiting the zoo.

"The ability to provide overflow parking at peak times will help the zoo to maximise revenue," she said.

"Improving the facilities for schools and groups would help continue and expand the zoo's important work with young people.

"It is so important to generate interest and enthusiasm in the next generation to care for our environment and wildlife both at home and worldwide."

Jade Wright, of Holme, said: "There are limited attractions in this area and Wildlife Oasis is by far the most affordable. 

"I am keen to help keep this business operating and thriving."

Not everyone was in favour however.

Yvonne Hulme, who lives close to the zoo, said the proposed car parks would 'harm the character of the flat landscape and long-ranging views'.

"I've never seen cars parked near the entrance or on the road verges due to lack of space in the current car park, and I pass the entrance two to three times a day," she said.

Mrs Marsden said moving the car park would allow the zoo to meet the higher standard for membership of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) 'and thereby join more conservation programs for endangered species'.

She said a perimeter fence needed to be set up around the zoo to meet EAZA's criteria and that this was more difficult with a centrally located parking area.

The work at Lakeland Wildlife Oasis is also to see a nature reserve created and changes made to the zoo's main building that will include an extension incorporating space for school groups.
