THE PEOPLE’S Gallery, in Kendal Museum, will show recent artwork by the artist Lavinia Haslam in February.
After the life-changing experience of wild water swimming in March 2020, Lavinia produced a range of photographs, different print mediums and videos that reflect this exhilarating yet mindful activity.
Of African/European heritage and a single mother of two, who has faced challenges and adversity, Lavinia explained: “The sensory connection of water led me to delve deeper into its different characteristics. Such as the sound it makes and linking this to how it can soothe the mind, something which has been used in meditative practices for millennia.
“I use the sound of running water within my practice. I wanted to look at the benefits which can be drawn from water to learn how it increases swimmers' mental resilience not only in the water but also out of the water - increasing mental resilience in everyday life, the swimmer must switch off anxiety and stress to concentrate on their breathing."
Lavinia’s exhibition will be accompanied by a soundtrack by Mikey Elliot.
Lavinia’s exhibition runs from Saturday, February 4 until Saturday, February 25.
The gallery is open every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between 9.30am and 4.30pm. Entry to the gallery is free.
There is a private viewing on Friday, February 3.
