ONE of Cumbria's more eclectic producers of craft spirits is celebrating his first full year as a unique but welcome addition to the county's boutique drinks scene.

Jim Whittam, of Grange, otherwise known by his spirits' brand name Jimmy Mohawk, conceived his fledgling company with his wife Melanie during lockdown, and began selling his produce in March 2021.

A baker by trade, Jim began by selling his vodka, gin, dark rum, and spiced rum at markets and through home delivery.

Jimmy Mohawk's stall, manned by him and his friend Tom Sharp, can be seen all over the county and beyond, and he delivers 'from Millom to Lancaster'.

He said his deliveries were so popular he had to invest in a 'specialist' delivery vehicle:

"The biggest highlight of the year for me was the acquisition of our new work van - I say van, I couldn't afford a functioning one of those so, I bought a hearse - only I could take delivery of a hearse the day after the Queen died.

"It wasn't planned. It was bought and organised on the Monday of that particularly horrific week."

Other additions this year are a Black Cherry and a Pineapple Rum:

"The black cherry is going particularly well, mixes nice and simply with coke and creates a black forest gateaux flavour."

Jimmy Mohawk has also made its way into several pubs and bars in the region:

"Our top pub for sales is the Keg and Kitchen in Grange - it helps that I'm there accosting folk.

"Rumour has it that if you say 'Jimmy Mohawk' at the bar three times I appear behind you and say 'howst fettle, marra'.

"Our last market is Sunday, December 11 at Kendal Golf Club.

"The two Saturdays after that we'll be set up outside the Hazelmere if you want to come through to Grange for a sample before you buy or don't buy if you hate it."

Jimmy is also proud of his various charity and community ventures:

"We're proud to have sponsored Beth Lindsey as part of the Barrow Ladies team through their first season in the women's Super League which is something we're looking to continue with."
