St John’s team of trekkers have completed their incredible hike through the rice paddy fields, villages and mountains of Cambodia.

After years of fundraising and training, the 31 trekkers have completed their challenge, reaching the stunning Angkor Wat, often described as the eighth wonder of the world.

Catherine Butterworth, who works at St John’s Hospice and took part in the trek said: “This has been such an incredible adventure.

"Everyone has worked so hard and supported each other, and the opportunity to see the beautiful people and countryside of Cambodia was worth enduring the long days of walking in 30 plus degrees heat.

“So far, the team have raised an absolutely incredible £121,000 – I am so proud of them all.

"They have taken on this challenge to support their local Hospice, and they have done St John’s proud.”

Dorna Ghashghaei, a former nurse at St John's Hospice, said “I have witnessed first-hand the exemplary care offered to patients as well as their friends, family and carers throughout their time with St John’s.

"The compassion and person-centred care are truly fantastic. Many people are not aware of the daily costs to run the Hospice, or that a significant majority comes from charitable donations.

"Through the trek we each learnt of our individual reasons- be it from losing loved ones; our friends and family members, or the fact that one day any of us could require care from the Hospice in the future.

"It was a tremendous trek with both mental and physical challenges.

"We all completed it as a team and supported each other quite literally every step of the way which very much mimics the ethos and spirit of St John’s Hospice.”

Gill Haigh, director of Cumbria Tourism, added: “The past week in Cambodia with the St John's Hospice trekkers has been an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

"At times the unrelenting heat, coupled with high humidity, meant it was tougher than we thought but the camaraderie, beautiful scenery, smiling local children, incredible hospitality of the Cambodian people and remembering why we were doing it are what will stick in my memory.”
