POLICE were forced to stop train services due to a report of children walking along a railway viaduct on the Furness Line.

Cumbria Police and British Transport Police received reports of two children walking along the railway track on the viaduct in Arnside.

British Transport Police officers attended, and trains were stopped while inquiries were conducted, but the children were not found.

A Police Community Support Officer said she had come across this on another occasion, and challenged the youngsters to which they replied: 'We are perfectly safe, we know what time the next train is due."

A police statement said: "Walking along the trainline is not only dangerous, it is illegal.

"Those found to be on the train track illegally, risk getting a criminal record and a £1,000 fine.

"We would ask that all parents and caregivers, please speak to your children about the dangers and consequences.

"We have also notified the school of this incident."
