A BARROW man was arrested at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash on the A595 near Askam on Monday morning that saw one woman airlifted to hospital.

Cumbria Police were called to the incident at 11.31am yesterday (Monday, October 24) after two vehicles collided on the A595 on Askam Road, at the junction for Askam.

North West Ambulance Service confirmed that the victims' injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

"Following the Road Traffic Accident on the Askam bypass, one patient was taken to Preston Royal Infirmary by air ambulance with chest, abdominal and pelvic injuries, and a second patient was taken by ambulance to Furness General Hospital with chest, hand, and head injuries," said a NWAS spokesman.

"None are believed to be life-threatening.

"Also treated at the scene were five walking wounded including three children.

"None were taken to hospital.

"Three ambulances attended including one urgent care vehicle."

The A595 was closed in both directions between Lots Road in Askam and the A590 at Elliscales roundabout at Dalton while emergency services made the road safe for vehicles.

A statement from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said: 

"At 11.37 am on October 24, 2022, two fire engines from Barrow and Ulverston fire stations attended an incident on Lots Road, Askam, to a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

"One casualty was extricated from a vehicle by fire crews, and taken to hospital by air ambulance.

"Firefighters used cutting equipment and were detained for approximately two hours and ten minutes."

Police confirmed in a statement a woman in her 60s was airlifted to Royal Preston Hospital with 'significant injuries'.

It went on to say: "A 52-year-old man from Barrow has been arrested after the crash for a driving offence.

"The collision involved a Toyota Corolla and a Ford.

"Anyone who witnessed either vehicle driving prior to the incident or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact police.

"Anyone with information relating to the incident is asked to contact police via www.cumbria.police.uk/report-it.
