A CONISTON woman has been praised for her work with several key organisations in the community.
Judith Myers has worked for many years with the Coniston First Responders, Coniston Grass Court Tennis Club, Brown Owl girls guides and most recently became president of the Coniston’s Women’s Institute.
Judith has spent her life working for the benefit of others and upheld the values of the community.
She said: “I wasn’t born in the area but we moved there when I was 15 months old. I married my husband Zeke and then came back to Coniston in 1990.
“It’s home for me.
“I’ve worked with the Tennis Club for the last twenty years and that has given me some very deep connections within the community and its people.
“Community is very important and I wish more people could join in with it. There is always a need for more.
“The tennis club has a long history and we need more people to play on the courts to keep them open.
“I joined the First Responders in Coniston 15 years ago. We are a group of volunteers who respond to medical emergencies and look after people until the Ambulance can get to them. It’s all volunteer work for the people who do it.
“I got into it a few years before and thought I would give it a go.
“It is a valuable part of the community, and it’s all about looking after people. We have three responders at the minute but we are always trying to get more, younger people trained to join us.
“A lot has happened in those fifteen years.
“We work with North Air Ambulance and volunteer for them. We get about 48 calls a year and we aim to get there within four minutes.
“I have had to take part in CPR on five occasions over those years.
“I am still at the Brown Owl at Hawkshead. We have 17 brownies and we meet each Monday.
“I joined the Women’s Institute three years ago and I recently became the President which I am very proud of.
“We still do our walk-in sessions and have an environmental group. People can come in for a natter and some chatter.
“I think to be part of the community is very important and we encourage everyone we can to join in.
“I encourage people to join our events, clubs and societies as they are so important to the village.
"I have loved being a leader with Girlguiding for 47 years and continue to be Brown Owl.
"Girlguiding in Hawkshead have 10 volunteers and two young leaders but we would always welcome more to help with the Guide Unit."
