Are you looking for the perfect place to take some time out and reflect? The answer could be right on your doorstep, with great places to get away from it all and reconnect with nature across Cumbria.
One of Cumbria’s three Areas of Natural Beauty, the Arnside & Silverdale AONB celebrates its 70th anniversary in 2022. Its diverse landscape includes ancient woodlands, sweeping sea views and a wide range of wildlife: it’s known for its butterflies, birds and wildflowers.
There’s also a fantastic network of footpaths to explore. Arnside Knott and Eaves Wood are both great for scenic wooded walks with stunning views across Morecambe Bay. Don’t miss the Fairy Steps at Beetham.
Further along the coast in West Cumbria, the village of St Bees marks the start of the Coast to Coast path: a route with impressive ocean views, recently designated a National Trail. Walk the first stretch towards the sandstone cliffs of St Bees Head: the highest and most westerly point in northern England.
It’s also an RSPB nature reserve, home to northwest England’s only cliff-nesting seabird colony including puffins, razorbills and herring gulls. See the birds from one of the three viewing points on the reserve, and admire the view – on a clear day, the Isle of Man is visible across the water.
Meanwhile, the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty is a tranquil haven in which to relax and rejuvenate. Explore on foot with an abundance of walking trails: whatever your ability, there’s lots to choose from.
Walk from Dufton to the awe-inspiring High Cup Nick; tackle the North Pennine Way, which passes through England’s joint highest market town of Alston; or meander along winding country paths like the route from Garrigill to Ashgill Force waterfall.
Another restorative day out is Grizedale Forest. Explore the many walking paths amidst the trees, punctuated by stunning views across the surrounding countryside. A Sculpture Trail features pieces from leading artists – see how many you can spot.
There are cycle routes if you prefer to explore on two wheels, with bike hire available from Bike Treks near the visitor centre. You can even trek alongside Cumbria’s native fell pony, enjoying the therapeutic effects of spending time with horses.
