THE results of research into the 'poshest' places in each UK county have been called into question by a prominent business owner in one such-named Cumbrian town.

According to research published by estate agents Savills on the most desirable place to live in each county, Hawkshead is the 'poshest' place to live in Cumbria, and among the top in the UK.

The research is based on a mix of the highest house prices, best lifestyle amenities, connectivity and even chocolate-box appeal. 

Maria Whitehead MBE, director of the award-winning Hawkshead Relish Ltd, based on The Square in Hawkshead, said that attention should instead be given to addressing the town's problems.

"It all depends on how you define 'posh' and if it's property prices then yes, I could agree, but in my book, it also means that there is a whole number of other things on offer that gives a certain quality of life, and surely that depends on what people want," she said.

"Hawkshead has a market charter and is in fact a town, although it no longer has a regular market, it is known as a chocolate box village, as it is very pretty with black and white buildings, cobbles, lovely views, and lots of flowers.

"There is a vibrant 'local' community in Hawkshead, although in the summer months they are overtaken by holidaymakers who flock to the village for the independent shops, cafes and to visit the Beatrix Potter gallery, grammar school where Wordsworth was educated, along with so much more.

"Alongside this, there are a host of activities for walking and cycling, and it's an ideal spot for exploring the rest of the lakes. 

"In the last few years, especially during and immediately after lockdown, property prices soared, and many properties have been sold for huge sums.

"This comes at a price for locals who are unable to get onto the property ladder, staffing becomes (and is) an issue for the hotels, shops, and businesses in the area as staff need homes that are affordable.

"Nobody wants to live in the poshest place, only to find that they can't shop, eat or have help when they need it, so there needs to be a balance. 

"I know that our MP Tim Farron is very vocal on this point.

"We also have an issue with our local GP surgery, which is losing three of the GPs from the practice as the Integrated Care Board has refused to listen to the needs of the community."
