A POPULAR sports event returns on Sunday, August 28 with a new friendly wheelbarrow garden competition.
All ages are encouraged to join in Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show's fun, green-fingered challenge, for the chance to win.
To enter people can just plant up a gardening-themed wheelbarrow and bring it along to the show to be judged and be in contention for the top prize of £25.
The show is also encouraging light-hearted competition between family members, but says that any winner should really be generous and share their prize with their family.
All of this is new for Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show, now in its 172nd year. The show has been missed, after a two-year pause during the Covid pandemic. It will continue to take place on The Showfield, at Stock Lane, Grasmere, just off the A591 between Ambleside and Keswick.
Alongside all the barrows, visitors can expect all the firm favourites including Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling, Fell Running and the Hounds Trails.
Add to this a huge programme of activities and attractions, including Ridgeside Falconry and its 15-20 different birds of prey from around the world performing in flying displays, a Fell Gather Roadshow talking all things Herdwick and the Fat Cat Brass Band, including their stilt-walking drummers.
“Whether you're a regular competitor in the sports or a family looking for a fun-fuelled day out, this year's show is not to be missed,” says the show manager, Deborah Black.
