A BANK has announced it will close its branch in Carnforth this autumn.

Barclays will close its branch in the town on October 13 due to a ‘sustained fall’ in visits.

A Barclays spokeswoman said that despite the closure, the bank will remain in the community and will be looking for a ‘suitable location’ where staff can visit ‘regularly’ to support customers through ‘alternative touch points’ such as the Barclays van.

She added that in total 41 regular customers use the Carnforth branch exclusively for banking and do not interact with the bank in other ways.

The nearest branch is now in Lancaster.

“The decision to close a branch is never an easy one. However, customers are increasingly using alternatives to branches to do their banking,” she said.

“As a result, we are seeing a sustained fall in branch visits across the UK.

“This is reflected at Carnforth branch, where there has been a 34 per cent reduction in counter transactions in the two years to March 2020. In addition, 85 per cent of our customers at the branch are also using different ways to bank.

“We will work with our customers and provide alternative options to ensure they can continue to manage their money and receive financial expertise when required.”

Customers will also be able to complete banking transactions at Carnforth’s bank at 21, Market Street and the nearest free-to-use ATM is at the Co-op in Market Street.

In January, Barclays closed its branches in Kirkby Lonsdale, Ulverston and Windermere, also citing a ‘dramatic’ drop in footfall.
