WORK to strengthen a culvert under a main road in a Yorkshire Dales town is to begin next month and last for three weeks.
The project in Burtersett Road, Hawes, follows an inspection that found the culvert to be in poor condition.
Work will start on Monday, July 4, with 'alternative lane closures using three-way traffic lights'.
North Yorkshire county councillor Yvonne Peacock, who represents the Upper Dales division, acknowledged there would be 'some level of inconvenience' to residents and asked for patience.
"There will be two phases to the work in order to avoid a full road closure to reduce disruption as much as possible," she said.
"We will, of course, keep the public updated as work progresses.”
The work will see the road surface stripped, the land above the culvert arch excavated, and a 300mm-thick concrete saddle installed.
The county council says on-site personnel will assist in managing vehicle access to properties and businesses during the closure but that 'there may be times when access is not possible'.
"Pedestrian access will be maintained," said a spokesman.
