The Liberal Democrat MP for Westmorland and Lonsdale Tim Farron said that the benefits payment won't be enough for struggling families.
The Government announced today that benefits recipients will get the first installment of their cost of living payment from 14th July.
More than eight million UK homes on benefits will receive £326 by the end of July.
Mr. Farron said: "This support I'm sure will be welcome to many of the people who have contacted my office in the last few months, desperate for help,
"However, with inflation continuing to soar, this support won't be enough to help people who are struggling to afford to pay the rent, feed their kids or fill their car.
"It also speaks volumes about where the priorities of the Conservative Government lie that they are giving £300 support payments to people on benefits, while wealthy second home owners in the Lake District will get £400 in support."
This is in reference to the Chancellor of the Exchequer giving the national £400 energy rebate in October to every home, including people that own multiple properties.
According to data from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities there were 253,357 second homes across England as of October last year.
Of these, over 10,000 are receiving a council tax discount of between 5 percent and 50 percent as second homes.
These homes will get an extra £4.1 million to help with their energy bills.
The Conservative MP for Barrow, Simon Fell, said:
"The first payments should land from 14 July supporting the lowest income famililes in Furness in the face of the global cost of living pressures.
"The package as a whole is worth some £37billion, including one off cash cost-of-living payments of at least £1,200 for the lowest income families."
This is factoring in the payments that all households will receive in the Autumn, and the second installment of the benefits package:
"This is part of a package that is designed to step up and help those in our society who need it the most."
