PLANS to open a driving theory examination centre in Kendal are 'highly important' to the town centre, according to plans.
A Heritage Statement has been submitted alongside plans to open a driving theory centre in a section of the Westmorland Shopping Centre.
The plans, submitted to South Lakeland District Council (SLDC), would see a stockroom in the centre converted ‘for the sitting and administration of computer-based driving theory test exams on behalf of the DVSA’.
Six jobs are expected to be created if the plan is passed.
It is proposed to be open from 8am-10pm on weekdays and from 9am-6pm at the weekend.
According to the Heritage Statement, the proposed works would not affect the external of the shopping centre, they are internal and therefore have no material effect on the character of the conservation area whatsoever.
The statement also underlines the importance of the examination centre.
It reads: "The test centre will be at an important part of the driving test safety programme, and is a use which is highly appropriate to this important town centre."
