A FUNDRAISER to secure the future of iconic Ulverston businesses has smashed its initial target.
The Roxy Collective was formed by a group of Ulverstonians earlier this month with the aim to purchase the Roxy building and maintain the businesses which are already there; The Roxy Cinema, Laurel and Hardy Museum, U-Gym Ulverston and 808010 Productions.
Ulverston Town Council granted The Roxy Collective £50,000 towards the project, which is just over a quarter of the asking price.
The Roxy Collective launched a fundraising page to appeal for community support for the project, with a goal of £20,000.
The total raised now sits at just under £22,000 after two weeks.
A spokesman for The Roxy Collective said: “Words cannot describe how overwhelmed and grateful we are for your generous support, donations, and goodwill. One of the reasons this Crowdfunder is so important is to show other funders just how loved The Roxy is by its community, and to say you've proved that is something of an understatement!
“Any money we raise that doesn't go directly into the purchase of the building will be used to start renovations.
“We're so excited for The Future Of The Roxy."
The group have no set a new stretch goal of £30,000.
Ulverston Mayor Bob Brown said: "I think that it’s amazing that the Ulverston community, and many from further afield, have shown the strength of their feelings about the need to keep hold of, and improve, the old Roxy building for the benefit of future generations.
"This is such an important and iconic building that is so loved by the people of Ulverston that they have dug deep into their pockets, even in these financially difficult times, to make sure that the town is able to keep this wonderful building. This commitment by the community has shown itself by the original Crowdfunding target being exceeded.
"I am very pleased that the Town Council was able to help kickstart this project and I look forward to a very positive future for this building and its lasting legacy for the wonderful town of Ulverston.
"I would ask everyone who is able to make a contribution, no matter how small, to do so and be a part of the success. This project is for the whole town and deserves to be supported."
