A landmark of Kendal's hostelry is set to bounce back after owners have submitted plans for a major investment.

The Globe Inn sits in the very heart of Kendal's market place, and after being closed since November 2020, owner Daniel Thwaites brewery has earmarked £250,000 to refurbish the Grade II-listed pub.

Thwaites has submitted plans to South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) for an extensive internal facelift, covering the ground and first-floor trading areas and private accommodation.

On the property details, Thwaites said: "Thwaites have plans for an exciting refurbishment for the Globe, making it a premium venue in Kendal.

"Plans include an internal glass porch leading into an attractive bar area refurbished to a high standard with booths and high seating.

"There will be an addition of a finishing kitchen to the second floor which will replace the existing bar, food will be delivered from the commercial kitchen on the third floor via a dumb waiter, and drinks from the first-floor bar."

Thwaites also said the refurbished kitchen will provide a brand new food offering, using local produce at every opportunity, and that a full cask ale range and seasonal beers will be available in addition to premium world beers, wines, spirits, and soft drinks.

The investment will also add outside seating with weatherproof covers.

The Historic England listed building document reveals that The Globe Inn was badly damaged by fire at some point in its past, and that the building as it is now is a modern reconstruction of the 18th-century original.

In the Heritage Statement submitted to SLDC as part of the planning documents, Thwaites said:

"Our conclusion, therefore, is that there is little, if any, historic fabric extant within the building.

"The significance of this asset appears to be due to its overall external appearance within the townscape as alluded to by the above statement ‘Included for its position in the townscape'

"The impact of general internal decorations along with the area of infill floor bear little to risk to any historic fabric."

Thwaites can't confirm a timescale as yet, but the company is now in the process of looking for the right person(s) to take the grand old pub into a new era, according to a spokesperson:

"Thwaites is recruiting now for a new tenant. 

"We are seeking an entrepreneurial business operator who has run a similar type of business and has the vision and level of finance to partner with Thwaites and maximise the potential of this opportunity."
