NEW research reveals the UK and Ireland’s best destinations for a mountain holiday in 2022 and Cumbria ranks second.
The outdoor experts at Blacks have ranked the most popular mountain destinations on factors such as the number of peaks and walking trails, Instagrammability, accommodation prices, and Google searches to reveal the best destinations for a mountain holiday.
In the British Isles, by far the area with the highest number of mountain peaks for you to explore is the Scottish Highlands, with 56 P600 mountains, including the UK’s largest mountain, Ben Nevis. The Highlands area is also the most Instagrammable of the country’s mountainous counties (>2.6 million posts).
In second place is Cumbria. The county is, of course, home to the English Lake District, but you may be surprised to know that it is home to just four ‘major’ mountains, although it is still the only county in England to be home to any at all.
Cumbria has the highest amount of walking and biking trails, with 1,203 and 394 respectively.
