A WOMAN who hasn’t had a haircut in years will donate her hair to charity and wants you to help out too.
Jasmine Shepherd, 22, of Ulverston, will cut her waist-length hair in order to donate it to the Little Princess Trust, who provide wigs to children with cancer.
She is urging people to sponsor her to aid the charity.
She said: “It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years but never had the guts to.
“The first thing people do when they see me is compliment my hair.
“But when people say they love my hair and others don’t have any because of something which isn’t their fault, it’s just heartbreaking.”
Ms Shepherd, who works in Booths in Ulverston, says she wants to get as many people involved as possible.
She has urged people to donate to the charity, through her JustGiving page, or in Booths, where there are donation boxes near the tills and in the staff room.
She said: “People at work are always quite shocked when they first see it. When it’s tied up and in a hair net it doesn’t look long.”
Ms Shepherd has had a charitable urge for years.
When she was a teenager she raised money for the maternity unit in Barrow after hearing a story about her mum doing the same thing when she was younger.
She’s wanted to get rid of her hair for charity for a few years now after seeing someone she knew do a similar fundraiser.
She said: “It’s always been something I’ve wanted to do, my mum had a friend who passed away with cancer and a boy at my school had leukaemia.”
The Princess Trust say that hair is central to a child’s confidence and identity, and provide real-hair wigs to children who have lost their hair through illness or treatment.
Ms Shepherd set a donation limit of £150, as this is what it costs to get a wig professionally fitted, but any money donated to the JustGiving page will go to the charity.
