AN Endmoor woman has been praised by her community for her outstanding contributions toward Macmillan Cancer Support.
Jules Smithers, 57, from Endmoor, has raised thousands for charity through her various fundraising ventures.
Through several Mighty Hike walks and her most recent Pamper and Prosecco evening, Jules has generated over £3,000.
Her fundraising was inspired following the diagnosis of her husband Glenn with cancer.
Jules said: “My husband was diagnosis back in 2014 and it was a very difficult time for us both.
“When we met Richard, our Macmillan nurse, he was very reassuring to us and really helped us through that time.
“They became the charity of my choice.
“I did a few of their Mighty Hikes, which are 26 miles long and you can just walk them even though they are marathon length.
“They hold a dozen across the country. I did the Keswick to Ambleside route six years ago, then me and my husband did the Northumberland one. Together we raised over £1,200 which was overwhelming.
“The Pamper and Prosecco night was a great success. I had it planned last year before Covid but it got pushed back. We had support from the Green Rooms and various super markets who donated prizes for us.
“People left with a real glow about them, and a good feeling of being relaxed and having some glasses of Prosecco. Took so long to arrange but it was worth it.”
Sue McDonald, Macmillan Fundraising Manager for Cumbria, said: “I’m so pleased that Jules is being nominated for a ‘Person of the Week Award’.
“This is very much deserved as Jules has been an amazing support to Macmillan in 2021 by taking part in four of the Mighty Hikes series and raising around £1,500.
“However, for Jules, that wasn’t enough, and she has recently hosted a Pamper and Prosecco Evening which was a roaring success — raising a further £1,600.
“Supporters like Jules are the backbone of Macmillan Cancer Support and their fundraising during the pandemic means more to Macmillan than ever before.”
A spokesman for Windermere Lake Cruises, which donated cruise tickets for her Pamper and Prosecco raffle, said: “I was amazed to read the staggering amount of funds raised on the night for such a great cause, and I am so pleased we could play a small part in helping Jules raise this total."
“You’re definitely one fundraiser I won’t forget.”
