A yellow weather warning for heavy snow has been issued for Cumbria this week.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for much of northern England and Scotland on Tuesday, with Storm Barra hitting the UK.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Heavy snow is expected across Northern England and Scotland brining likely travel disruption, especially over higher routes.”
Met Office weather warning for heavy snow
This is what to expect in those areas according to The Met Office:
- Possible travel delays on roads stranding some vehicles and passengers
- Possible delays or cancellations to rail and air travel
- There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off
- There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
The Met Office expects rain and hill snow to hit Cumbria through Monday, with a maximum temperature of 7 degrees.
Monday night will see minimum temperatures fall to -2 degrees, while further blustery showers are expected.
Outbreaks of heavy rain, falling as snow on high ground, will then land on Tuesday, with Storm Barra bringing severe gales in places.
When will it snow in Cumbria?
Netweather predicts a 95 per cent chance of snow across Cumbria on Tuesday, with a 75 per cent chance of snow on Wednesday.
But this is what The Met Office predict:
Carlisle
The Met Office predicts Carlisle will experience heavy rain rather than any snow on Tuesday.
The worst of the downpour is expected between 2pm and 6pm.
Penrith
Sleet will fall in Penrith from 2pm on Tuesday, but that is set to be replace by heavy rain in the evening.
The Met Office expects heavy rain to fall between 6pm and 8pm.
Windermere
Heavy rain will also fall in Windermere on Tuesday from 2pm, but it will be replaced by sleet at 5pm, before the weather dries up at 8pm.
Brough
Some sleet is expected to fall in Brough on Monday afternoon at 2pm.
However, come Tuesday that will be replace by heavy rain between 2pm and 7pm, The Met Office says.
Whitehaven
The Met Office believes heavy rain will hit Windermere rather than snow.
The worst of the rain will strike between midday and 5pm.
