Yellow warning for rain

A yellow warning for rain is active for parts of Cumbria. This has been in place for several days, and at present according to Met Office is due to end 10:00am today, Monday, November 1.

The Met Office state: “Further heavy rain during Thursday, easing for a time in the north, but a further spell of heavy rain moving across the area during Friday. Rainfall totals will vary, but 20-40 mm is expected widely, with 50-60 mm in places and as much as 80 mm over some hills. This is in addition to the very high rainfall totals over the previous 24-36 hours over the north of the area, where an Amber warning remains in place.”

Up to 300mm is expected to fall in parts of the region, which typically sees an average of 160mm in October.

Amber warning for rain

An amber warning for rain was in place for most of Cumbria. The warning has since ended.

The rainfall experienced in Cumbria right now is much higher than standard for this time of year, hence warranting the weather warnings.

Met Office meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: “In a 24-hour period you could see a month’s worth of rain.

“The rainfall total is much higher than the average rainfall for this time of year, definitely, and in general, for any time of year it’s a lot of rainfall in a short period of time,” she told the PA news agency.
