Furness Bar Watch has seen a rebrand after the launch of a new scheme yesterday morning.

The relaunch saw 65 people from the Furness area's licensed premises in attendance at Barrow Labour Club.

Guest speakers at the event included Joe Murray QPM from National Pubwatch, Superintendent Matt Pearman from Cumbria Police and Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell, all of which support the scheme.

The relaunch from Furness Bar Watch to Furness Pubwatch came about after the devastating impact Covid-19 had on the hospitality industry and the effect it had on businesses in the area.

They now have a new logo and an updated digital platform scheme link where members can access all relevant information.

It is hoped that the group will deter troublemakers from the area.

National Pubwatch is a voluntary organisation which supports the work of local Pubwatch schemes with the aim to create a safer drinking environment in all licensed premises throughout the UK.

Pub watch coordinator for South Lakes Wendy Ingham confirmed the group is not all about banning people.

"We keep members updated on the latest legislation, hold training sessions, and invite guest speakers to talk to meetings, and the group works in partnership with both Barrow Borough Council and Cumbria Police," she said.

"Pubwatch is an important tool in keeping the night time economy a safe environment for members of the Furness area to live, work and socialise. Customers want to feel safe when visiting venues."

Delighted to see the support for the scheme, Barrow and Furness MP Simon Fell said: "It was great to see a packed room for the launch of Furness Pubwatch.

"This is a great scheme that keeps customers, the community and licence-holders and their staff safe.

"I'm glad that the council and police are supporting it and very much hope that more and more bars, pubs and clubs sign up."
