COLUMNIST Andrew Thomas talks all things Westmorland.
Everyone should be delighted that Westmorland County Show proved to be such a big success last week.
It was a triumphant return for the show, which was cancelled last year amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year the show was spread over two days for the first time in its 222-year history as part of the organisers’ commitment to ensuring the event was as safe as possible for everyone.
The first day - Wednesday - was blessed with glorious sunshine and soaring temperatures, helping to attract a bumper crowd to the showground at Lane Farm at Crooklands.
The second day had the added attraction of visits by two Royal guests. Princess Anne and Sophie the Countess of Wessex were at the show to meet charity representatives and speak to exhibitors.
The County Show is an essential part of the social fabric of this area so well done to Christine Knipe and her team for their hard work and commitment in organising such a great event.
Another key local event - the two-day Holker Chilli Fest at Holker Hall - also enjoyed great weather.
There was a large crowd, keen to sample chilli, food from local specialist suppliers and cuisine from around the world. Meanwhile the Tour de Furness attracted hundreds of riders and raised thousands of pounds for charity.
Another big public event lies ahead. Kendal Torchlight will be hosting a three-day gathering in the heart of Kendal from September 24, including walking parades, music and theatre performances, fire sculptures and lots of fun activities.
The theme this year is ‘Garden of Delights’ and a central hub of the extravaganza will be a garden filled with giant illuminated flowers and wildlife.
There are still a few days to enter some of the events or volunteer to help the weekend run smoothly.
In addition, Kendal Mountain Festival is returning with a full live, in-person programme in November after being virtual last year. Key events will be recorded and made available to view online through the festival’s new Kendal Mountain Player. We are fortunate indeed to have so many strong community events in this area.
